Mr. Sandy,I am Mike Hege's granddaughter, Kate. I am making a science magazine as my science project and am wondering if I can email you some questions about yourself and your observatory? I think it would be awesome to have an interview with a real astronomer. My email address is kesadler03@comporium.netThank you!Kate Sadler

Seasons Greetings, I was wondering if you might be able to suggest an outstanding focuser for my black OTA C14 for visual and imaging. My mount is a Parallax HD200C. I have asked for suggestions on Cloudynights and Astromart but few have responded to my question. I am sure there is no single focuser that will excel for visual AND imaging. One individual did suggest a FeatherTouch with a power package. Any specifics you can provide would be appreciated. Regards, -JW:

Hi, great site! I'm writing because we (Pomfret School, a small boarding school in NE CT) just got a very similar setup to yours. We're very excited as we begin to prepare to put it all together. We got a C14 and an FSQ106 to be mounted on a Paramount ME. Coupling those with an SBIG STL11K and we should be in business! I wanted to know, before we set up, what you wished you would have known or did when you started putting your facility together. Any must-have puchases? Any pitfalls to avoid? Any advice on any part of the process? I'd appreciate any guidance at all, thanks!

Hi... I was just looking thru your web site.... although 4-5 years away, I'm beginning to plan my observatory .... I've been on the waiting list for a 1200GTO for 18 months or so... I notice that you only had yours for a few months before moving to the paramount... if you don't mind me asking, why did you switch... just looking at the load ratings, the AP1200 is rated to carry more weight, although the paramount looks like a heavier mount? Thanks Don

Great website! Thanks for sharing - lots of effort involved no doubt. I really like how you're able to mount your refractors tucked in close to the mount but am curious if you need to program the mount to avoid the scary thought of the refractors hitting the mount when slewing. I'd like to use your tucked-in refractors idea eventually and would certainly appreciate any comments regarding this. Thanks....Carl

Good to see serious astronomy still alive. You are doing my dream, now all you need to do is grab a bunch of old satalite dishes and build a radio array. :D

Frank, I like your web site and your gallery in particular. I just purchased a C14 from Joe Golias of Astrozap. Geez, it's huge! I can't wait to start using it, I'm really stoked. It will be about a month or so before I can get a mount for it. I hope to find a used Losmandy Titan or an MI-250, but so for, no luck. Someday, I too would like to own an AP refractor to compliment the C14. I would also like to build a backyard observatory similar to yours. But, one thing at a time, and in its own time!

Hello, I'm interested in building an obeservatory with pier for now a C8, maybe later a C14. I notice you put the alt-az adjustment plate at the bottom of the pier near the concrete. Why did you not put it at the top near the scope? Do you have problems with vibration, or is your pier thick enough? Did you fill the pier with anything? Thanks much, Elliott

In your section tech stuff you have an interesting and simple system to lock C-14 mirror. I have just got a brand new C-14. I have noticed you cannot unscrew completely the original mirror locking screw. Question: How did you remove them from your C-14 ?

Hello. I will be building my second observatory soon, as I will be relocating to the San Bernardino Mountains (around 6,000' msl) near the end of December. The area offers dark skies, but is full of trees... Still debating over a roll-off or dome. I will be dealing with a large amount of snow, so a high pitch roof will be needed, which translates into high weight. Can you move your roof on your own? Regards, Lou

I just finished my rolloff this past December & it was based on Chris Vedeler's also. Your rails are made just like mine. I had rain get inside the angle iron between the welds & ran into the observatory. If you didn't already I would reccomend caulking the angle iron all the way down each side. I also caulked each side of the metal plate (that the angle is welded to) where it meets the wood. Seems if there is ice on the rail it melts & works its way under the plate & inside. I had this problem on one rail only --It wasn't exactly level but I caulked both. I also built up the caulk like a little dam just prior to where the rail enters the observatory to keep any heavy rain from possibly coming in. Did you use stainless steel or galvanized angle iron? I used plain angle iron & sprayed a cold galvanizing compound on & a primer & it is not holding up . The wheels chew it right off. What have you used?? Good luck, Gerry.
